Android Mobile phone Wi-Fi connection problem

I was having problems connecting my Samsung Galaxy Portal (AKA Spica, GT-I5700) to our home Wi-FI. On clicking the connect to Wi-Fi button, I was getting no further than the message “Obtaining an IP address”. The solution…

…was to set the phone to use a fixed IP address:

  • Go to Settings, Wireless & networks, Wi-Fi settings.
  • Press the Menu button, and tap Advanced.
  • Check Use Static IP, and then you’ll be able to enter the required details.

Once set, connecting to Wi-Fi was instantaneous. I have a Thompson TG585v7 with Software Release: 8.2.7.7. My phone is running Android 2.1.

You may have to (a) Delete the old Wi-Fi network entry for your router, so the phone can start with fresh details (b) Restart the phone.
